Thanks Del. I think Rob Allison made a post some time back about someone who bought fake chinese GPX-4500 or GPX-5000 unit(s). So you never know if those cheap GPX-5000's are fakes with VLF guts in them. Buyer beware and be careful if you are not buying from a genuine certified dealer like Rob.

Early 4500's were Australian-manufactured, with later production Malaysian-sourced. Later models had circuitry incorporating some minor improvements introduced with the GPX-5000, which came out a couple of years after the launch of the 4500. I think diehards believe the Aussie-made 4500's are better, but this may just be local loyalty.

The advantage is the pulse detectors can find gold and silver coins way deeper. It does not have to be a 5000. The mode the 5000 has for coin hunting is just a gimmic to lure some into buying it. The 4800, 4500, 4000, 3500, extreme, and 3000 will do the same thing as long as the detector has iron mask.
